An oral appliance works by positioning the mandible (lower jaw) forward so that the airway is able to stay unobstructed, while sleeping. The appliances are custom fabricated specific to each patient. Dr. Winters has trained in dental sleep medicine and is able to select, fabricate, fit, and adjust each appliance to the optimal therapeutic position. We believe that comfort is key and will help you choose from many options to find the best appliance. Custom fabricated oral appliances have been accepted and are recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) since 2015. These appliances provide comfortable relief and are tailor-made to fit you. They are not only affordable; they are also effective.
Oral Appliance Therapy
The first appointment is all about getting to know the patient! Through a screening, questionnaire, and airway evaluation we can identify the next steps.
Patients with signs and symptoms of a sleep related breathing disorder need a sleep study to identify and diagnose any disorders.
Dr. Winters will review the data and findings from the sleep study, then present the recommended treatment plan specific to each patients needs.
The patient receives their custom appliance along with instructions on wearing and caring for the appliance!
Sometimes patients do not get complete relief from CPAP treatment despite patient compliance. In these cases, we often recommend combination therapy with an oral appliance for the best results. When treatment is consistently effective and comfortable, patients are more likely to comply and enjoy a restful sleep.
